Direct bookings without commission: relying less on OTAs
How Bodrum hotels, villas and restaurants can win more commission-free bookings with a clear website, easy booking, WhatsApp and a well-kept Google profile.

Booking.com, Expedia and other online travel agencies (OTAs) are an essential shop window for many hotels and villas in Bodrum. They are often the easiest way to reach international guests. But the commission on every booking adds up to a serious line item by the end of the season, and much of the relationship with the guest stays with the platform. The goal isn't to leave the OTAs. It is to bring a bigger share of bookings through your own channel. Here are the practical steps.
Why OTAs still have a place
Let's be fair to them first. OTAs put you in front of guests who have never heard of you, handle payments and cancellations, and reach people searching in many languages. For a new business, or for quiet weeks in the shoulder season, they are a valuable channel.
The problem starts when the OTA becomes the only channel. The guest finds you there, books there, and searches there again next year. You pay commission every time, while the guest's email, preferences and likelihood of returning belong to the platform rather than to you. A healthier setup treats the OTA as a discovery channel and your own website as the relationship channel.
Guests are already looking for you
Many guests who find your hotel on an OTA go on to search your name on Google — to see more photos, read reviews, or check whether booking direct gets them something better. That moment is your biggest direct-booking opportunity, and what they find decides the outcome.
Ask yourself:
- When someone searches your name, does your own site appear first, or your OTA listing?
- Does your Google Business Profile show a current website link, phone and WhatsApp number?
- Have recent reviews been answered — and are English reviews answered in English?
- How many steps does it take to book on your site?
The answers are the starting point of your direct-booking strategy.
Your website should work as a booking tool
A hotel or villa website isn't a brochure; it's a sales channel. Within seconds, a visitor should see what you look like, whether you have availability, and how to book.
- A booking engine: pick dates, see prices, pay securely. Connected to your channel manager, it shares one availability calendar with the OTAs and reduces the risk of double bookings.
- Mobile speed: most guests browse on their phones. A slow site full of heavy images sends a hesitant guest straight back to the OTA.
- Two languages, properly: English pages should speak to an international guest directly, not read like a translation. Transfers, breakfast and cancellation terms should be clear.
- Real photos: your rooms, garden and view as they are, shot in good light.
Give guests a reason to book direct
If a guest sees the same room on the same terms on an OTA and on your site, they'll usually pick the platform they know. Booking direct needs a small but visible advantage. A lower price isn't the only lever; after checking the rate conditions in your OTA contracts, consider:
- A free airport transfer or late check-out.
- A welcome drink, a glass of wine at dinner, priority on a boat trip.
- More flexible cancellation terms.
- An early-booking or long-stay benefit available only on your site.
- A personal thank-you for returning guests.
Spell these out in your booking area, your Instagram bio and your Google profile. If guests can't see the difference, there isn't one.
WhatsApp and the conversation before the booking
Many guests in Bodrum want to ask something before booking: "Do you have a cot?", "Can we bring our dog?", "Is late August free?" A quick, warm reply is one of the strongest direct-booking tools you have.
WhatsApp Business lets you set quick replies, opening hours and a short catalogue. What matters is ending the conversation with a clear next step: a booking link, a payment link or a confirmation email. When a chat drifts without one, the guest drifts back to the OTA.
The same applies to restaurants and beach clubs. Rather than leaving table or sunbed reservations entirely to a third-party platform, keep a direct booking or WhatsApp link on your site and Google profile.
Keep the guest after the stay
The real value of a direct booking shows up the following year. With their consent, you can keep a direct guest's contact details and stay in touch: a thank-you email, a link to leave a Google review, a short note before next season. Small steps that add up. Handle personal data in line with KVKK and, for European guests, GDPR: ask for clear consent and use the data only for the purpose you stated.
OTA guests aren't a lost cause either. A great stay, plus a friendly mention of your website and WhatsApp line at checkout, makes a direct booking next time more likely. Just respect the guest-communication terms in your OTA agreement.
Direct booking checklist
- Your own site ranks near the top when people search your name.
- Your Google Business Profile has a current website link, phone and WhatsApp.
- Every recent review has a reply, in the reviewer's language.
- Your site has a booking engine with dates, prices and secure payment.
- The booking engine is synced with your channel manager.
- The site is fast on mobile and the English pages read naturally.
- At least one concrete direct-booking benefit is offered and clearly visible.
- WhatsApp Business is set up with quick replies, and messages are answered the same day.
- Guest contact details are stored with consent.
- At the end of each season, you compare the share of direct and OTA bookings.
